This article examines innovations in probiotic foods, highlighting non-dairy alternatives that promote digestive health and gut microbiota balance. The gut microbiota is fundamental to physiological functions such as digestion, metabolism, and immune response; maintaining its balance with probiotics helps prevent metabolic, inflammatory, and even neuropsychiatric disorders. Traditionally, probiotic foods were dairy products like yogurt; however, demand for alternative options has driven the development of non-dairy foods, including cereals, fruits, vegetables, and snacks. These products aim to offer similar benefits to dairy items and make probiotics accessible without dietary disruption. Selecting the right products is essential to ensure probiotic efficacy, considering bacterial species and strain, dosage, and complete ingredient list. However, in countries like Mexico, the lack of clear regulatory standards on labeling and safety presents a challenge for consumers, who must rely on informative labeling and expert recommendations. The diversity of these products allows for accessible integration into daily diets, emphasizing their potential as convenient alternatives to improve gut health.
