Development of a Geographic Information System and Geoportal for Poverty and Inequality in Sonora, Mexico.

Abstract

This paper showcases the creation of a Geographic Information System (GIS), accessible as a publicly available geoportal hosted on the El Colegio de Sonora platform. The GIS system facilitates dynamic interaction with diverse datasets and indicators related to poverty and conditions of inequality. The primary objective is to establish a spatial context for analytical endeavors and to offer opportunities for practical interventions aimed at addressing poverty reduction on regional and local scales. The article introduces the theoretical framework underpinning the conceptualization of poverty and inequality, which informed the selection of data sources and variables integrated into the GIS. The subsequent sections detail the methodological approach used in constructing the GIS and geoportal, comprising a total of 264 information layers.
